A visa to the Russian Federation is a document, permitting stay in Russia for a specific period of time. Visa lists entry/exit dates, your name, passport details, and a purpose of travel. Please note, that your Russian visa is an exit permit just like it’s an entry permit: if you lose it or stay over your designated departure date, leaving the country could be more troublesome than entering it.

The Embassies of Russia and Russian Consulates require that all foreign travelers to Russia have a Russian visa invitation in order to issue the applicant a Russian visa.
A foreign citizen can obtain a visa to Russia ONLY in the country of his/her citizenship. Exceptions include those who have a residence permit for a foreign country for the period more than 90 days.
After you have received your invitation (voucher) by e-mail , you are required to bring a copy of it to the Russian Consulate in your country. It’s better to check with the Russian consulate beforehand if they accept copies of invitations or only originals.

Visa registration
Russian law requires that travelers register their visas if they are staying in Russia more than 3 business days. If travelers are staying in Russia more than 3 business days they should apply for registration immediately upon arrival (on the same day). Travelers who do not have their visas registered are required to pay fines when they attempt to exit Russia or if they are stopped by the police.
There are two ways to register your Russian visa:
1) At the hotel/hostel where you’re staying
2) At the inviting organization/travel agency
